Top Ten Tuesday: Intimidating Books

This meme is hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish. Links go to Goodreads. This week, the topic is:

Top Ten Books That Intimidate You

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)

1. A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R.R. Martin - There's obviously quite a bit of hype surrounding this series, but honestly I get iffy with it because of how insanely long it is, plus I heard it takes the author like three years at a time to publish a new one.

Requiem (Delirium, #3)

2. Requiem by Lauren Oliver (Delirium #3) - I'm scared of the open ending everyone is saying there is! Very, very frightened.

 Insurgent (Divergent, #2)

3. Insurgent by Veronica Roth (Divergent #2) - I can't believe I still haven't read this yet after adoring the first. I'm nervous it won't be as good, I guess.

Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry, #3)

4. Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles (Perfect Chemistry #3) - I loved the first two in this series, but I've seen a lot of negative reviews for this one, so I'm a bit hesitant.

13 Little Blue Envelopes (Little Blue Envelope, #1)

5. 13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson - I've almost started this so many times that now it's hard to break the pattern.

 Wuthering Heights

6. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - Honestly, does this need an explanation? I guess I'm just tired of reading about references to this novel and having no idea what people are talking about.

Crank (Crank, #1)

7. Crank by Ellen Hopkins - This could be for any of her books, really. I know she's a popular author, but I've always hated reading in verse. Still, I'd like to try something by her someday.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

8. The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky - I have no idea why I avoid this. I know it was just made into a movie.

Need (Need, #1)

9. Need by Carrie Jones - Mostly I'm just afraid of not liking this because I really want to.

Icons (Icons, #1)

10. Icons by Margaret Stohl - Honestly, I want to read this, but since I absolutely hated Beautiful Creatures, I just can't see myself loving it.

  1. I'm reading Divergent right now (shoot me for being late) so I totally understand why you picked Insurgent. When books or anything for that matter become too overrated, you start to doubt whether people are liking it because it's a trend to do so or if it really IS worth the hype.

    1. I do feel that way sometimes. I hate being blinded by hype, but it does happen. Sometimes I'll re-read something and honestly wonder why I gave it such a high rating the first time. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. Withering heights and Perks of being a wallflower are both still on my shelf, waiting but keep avoiding them too, it's a hard one... Here's my list: http://fabulousbookfiend.blogspot.co.uk/?m=0

    1. Those horrible books that you just keep jumping over for no reason, lol.

  3. I liked Divergent well enough, and I've been waiting so long for Allegiant, but Game of Thrones was just a huge headache. I haven't completely read Perks, but I loved the movie, and people say it's even more touching in word form, so I'm thinking you might really like it :) Great post!

    1. Thank you! I really would like to read Insurgent before the third one come out, but we'll well. Sorry Game of Thrones was a disappointment. Honestly, if you're going to put that much time into a book, it had better at least be a four star read.

  4. We've got several books the same this week! I'm very intimidated by Game of Thrones!

    1. Who isn't just a little bit scared of those boosk? Lol :D

  5. Oh no! You mustn't avoid Perks of Being A Wallflower! That book is so very special, but i can understand where it is a very hyped up book that might not fulfill expectations at this point. I have also been very nervous to read Insurgent, but I must before Allegiant comes out!

    1. I'm glad you liked PpBaW! Honestly, it just doesn't seem like my thing, but I'll try to get to it someday. Yes, we must both read Insurgent! :)

  6. I've read Insurgent and I personally liked it more than Divergent! And Requiem! OMG....I am SO SCARED to read it....I wasn't a big fan of Pandemonium and I might cry if Lena doesn't end up with the person I want her to. (Alex) I have heard negative things about it too! :( It just freaks me out even more!!!

    1. I've heard that the love triangle isn't even really dealt with. I'm afraid it's going to make me mad - I'm emotionally invested in that series, you know? I'm going to have to force myself to read it. :/

  7. Oooh interesting list! I agree with Game of Thrones. I own it and have read a whole 20 pages, but am not quite sure if/when I'll ever actually getting around to reading it.

Insurgent? Disappointed me for sure. The ending left me excited for book three, but I still had to get through the rest of the book first. I would say if you're going to read it, wait until the release date for the third book so you can dive right in!

Ellen Hopkin books are the only books in verse that I read and enjoy, so I definitely think you should give them a shot sometime!

Oh, and Icons? I totally agree with you. I really didn't like the Beautiful Creatures series (even though I read all the books) so cannot see myself picking up the other books by either authors. I would think maybe on their own it might be better, but meh...

    1. I like to think I will someday, but I could be lying to myself, lol. Maybe I'll try out the show first?

I'm sorry to hear that! I've heard that a lot of people had issues with Tris' behavior, like she was really sad a lot? that's what I plan to do! :_

Okay, I'll definitely give Crank or Burned or whatever a shot sometime. Have to try something new. :)

I can't fathom how someone could read all those books. I read about eight chapters of BC. The male narrator sounded very much like a woman and the writing in general was terrible. Plus, I thought the movie trailer looked insanely stupid.

  8. The length aside, the reason why I keep pushing off reading the Song of Ice and Fire series is how it takes so long for the new one to come out. Three years is just too long for me.

  9. I have not read Requiem for the EXACT same reason you mention! It's sitting on my shelf staring at me, and I just can't do it!

  10. Good list, I definitely understand why a bunch of these are intimidating. Game of Thrones totally isn't my thing, but I'm always impressed by friends who commit to reading so many books that are so long! I can tell you that Insurgent definitely isn't as good as Divergent, but it's still worth reading. And I'm on the same page as you with Little Blue Envelopes.

    1. I know! I guess I can understand why it takes the author so long to write them, but really? So many pages. -_- I'm sorry to hear that about Insurgent - I get so many mixed opinions about it!

  11. I'm intimidated by Game of Thrones too! All I've heard is that it's a perfect awesome read, so I'm staying away from it for now.
And Requiem. I had no problems with the ending, I just had a problem with the pacing and why one character REFUSED to die. ):
OMG, read Crank and Ellen Hopkins' other books NOW. I promise you won't regret it Rebecca!
Great list & thanks for stopping by my TTT! (:

    1. You have now made me very curious about Requiem. Hmm . . . Lol, okay, I'm glad you liked Hopkin's books. I'll give them a try if you read Unravel Me. ;)

  12. I ended up really liking the Need series! It wasn't a great one, but it was enjoyable. My cousin who refuses to read, will only read Ellen's books. And yes- Insurgent definitely worth reading, but at this point I'd wait until closer to Allegiant.

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!

    1. Good to know, I'll pick Need up if I want to be entertained, and not much else. I probably will wait for Allegiant, just because it's not too far away.

  13. So true about Insurgent! I freakin' loved Divergent and so nervous about picking up Insurgent. Eep. I avoided The Perks of Being A Wallflower for a long time as well but I recently read it and I think everyone should read it at least once. It's a good read. Chain Reaction is a great book, weird that I haven't come across a negative review for it.

    1. I'm not usually the type of person to be so nervous with sequels, but I guess it does happen. I'm glad you enjoyed tPoBaW! Well, it wasn't so much bad reviews as it was people saying that it wasn't as good as the other two.

  14. I've been seeing a lot of "A Game of Thrones". I tried to read the first book but I couldn't get into it. I figure I'll never read them. Great list.

  15. I took Wuthering Heights out of the library over a decade ago, in my early twenties, and felt so ashamed I never got around to reading it while I had it. I've since heard it's not as good as it's been crack up to be, though I still feel I should give it a try. At the very least, I'll be able to say if I find it an overrated "classic" like The Great Gatsby, or a classic deserving of its accolades, like The Divine Comedy.

    1. I think I'll be lucky if I read one classic in my lifetime, Carrie-Anne. I've also heard that about Wuthering Heights, but yes, we should both try it at some point.

  16. I saw Game of Thrones on someone else's list too and can't believe I didn't have that on mine!! TOTALLY would have topped this list!!!!

Great picks! And thanks for stopping by my TTT!

  17. I think I might be the minority in this, but I liked Insurgent just as much as the first book… and I think you just struck fear into my heart for the third Lauren Oliver book… Thanks a lot. ;)

    1. Sorry about that! Hopefully it's just as good as Pandemonium, which is my favorite so far (though I did miss Alex).

  18. I read Game of Thrones, I was intimidated by it when I read it, but I did it and now I face the same intimidation with the second book, which is on my list! I am also intimidated by Insurgent, though I forgot to put it on my list! I'm scared it wont be as good as Divergent!

    1. Me, too! I think anyone who can make it through Game Of Thrones should get some kind of award, lol.

  19. I love to hate Wuthering Heights. I don't see why people thing it's romantic... I found the characters to be vile and somewhat revolting... but I admire the author creating such vivid characters.

As for Insurgent.. I didn't think it was as good as Divergent - but I still enjoyed it and thought it was great. Read it! If only so then you'll be ready for Alligence or whatever #3 is called!

Also... Game of thrones. All those books are sitting on my shelf just waiting to be loved... I need to get there! but they are such a commitment!
