Review: Frostbite by Richelle Mead

Frostbite (Vampire Academy, #2)

Goodreads Summary: Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose...
It’s winter break at St. Vladimir’s, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy’s crawling with Guardians—including Rose’s hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn’t bad enough, Rose’s tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason’s got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa’s head while she’s making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy’s not taking any risks... This year, St. Vlad’s annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.
But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price...

Favorite Quote: “You can't force love, I realized. It's there or it isn't. If it's not there, you've got to be able to admit it. If it is there, you've got to do whatever it takes to protect the ones you love.”

Review:

After reading and loving Vampire Academy not too long ago, I knew I was definitely going to read the rest of the series soon - I actually went and bought the last three because I already got Shadow Kissed from the library (the ugly redesigned one).

All in all, I enjoyed the plot and was constantly interested in what was going to happen next; there's something about this series that's really addicting, kind of along the same lines as Karen Marie Moning's Fever books were for me. It's not exactly the best writing in the world, but it's really creative and different. I hope to finish up all six of these soon, because this strikes me as the kind of story that you could easily mix up the details about simply because there's so much going on.

At first, I was kind of annoyed with Lissa for not really paying a lot of attention to Rose and her problems in their friendship, but come to think of it, it's really not her fault - Rose has chosen not to let her in about anything that's going on, especially her romantic problems with Dimitri. Lissa also isn't around as often as she was in VA, but that's mostly due to her boyfriend, Christen, who I really liked as a character. The sarcastic ones are always fun.

I still have a love/hate thing with Rose. I really like her fiery nature, but I just hated how she strung Mason along throughout most of the story. I can't say I was surprised when he (view spoiler); it was pretty convenient for the plot. And, from what I've heard, I assume this Adrian guy is coming into play as a love interest. I kind of like him, he's . . . quirky. But at the same time I think he'd be all wrong for Rose - she's already rebellious and wild. She needs someone quieter, calmer. Someone like Dimitri, who I love. I felt like the romance between him and Rose got a lot more realistic in Frostbite, especially the moment when she told him she wanted him to be happy, no matter what he chose.

I'm very excited to start Shadow Kiss soon and see where this series is going next - I'm going to plow through it and start Bloodlines so I can be ready for The Fiery Heart when it comes out. Hopefully.
